Eito Shinozaki

Eito Shinozaki is a ceramic artist based in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture.

He primarily works on the wheel and enjoys creating functional, free, and irregular forms. His pieces are unglazed and wood-fired using traditional Bizen-ware techniques, allowing fire to play a significant role in the final result.

His journey

Born in Yokohama in 1997, Eito spent six years of his youth in the United States and the United Kingdom. These experiences allowed him to look at his own Japanese heritage from a new perspective.

He discovered ceramics in Los Angeles before returning to Japan to study ceramics at the Bizen Pottery Center, from which he graduated in 2023.

Since then, he has developed a personal practice that combines the forms he creates on the wheel with the natural colours and effects of traditional Bizen firing in his own noborigama kiln.

In 2026, he built an anagama kiln in Can Brull, Barcelona, and presented his work in a solo exhibition at Mugenan, Tokyo.

His work & our selection

What drew me to Eito's work goes beyond his mastery of Bizen ceramics. I was particularly touched by his personality and his contemporary take on a craft deeply rooted in tradition.

His pieces are designed to be used. The potter's wheel gives birth to the form, while the wood fire transforms the surface and reveals variations specific to each firing.

For Tadaima, I chose several of his guinomi as well as a small kyusu. Objects simple in their function, but which allow one to fully appreciate his relationship with form, material, and fire.
