Bizen, Okayama, Japan

Atsuo Mori

Atsuo Mori is a ceramic artist in Bizen who works in the same studio as his son, Taiga Mori.

His working method is characterized by a completely manual approach: his pieces are shaped without the use of a potter's wheel.

His Journey

Atsuo worked in Okayama for a long time before rediscovering ceramics in retirement.

He then joined the family workshop in Bizen, where he continues his practice today alongside his son.

Although they share the same working environment and the same Bizen heritage, their approaches are very different. While Taiga works mainly on the wheel, Atsuo builds his pieces entirely by hand and has specialized in one particular object: the hōhin.

His work & our selection

The hōhin is at the heart of Atsuo's work.

He particularly masters its form and manufacture, as well as the different possibilities offered by the material and firing. He notably adapts his clays according to the effects he wants to achieve on his pieces.

His hōhin are also recognizable by their decorations, often inspired by Okayama Prefecture and its environment: fish, animals and other motifs that evoke the region to which he is attached.

Firing effects, such as hidasuki or goma, complete this work of material and give each piece its own variations.

It is this very personal mastery of the hōhin, combined with entirely handmade work, that made me want to select his pieces for Tadaima.
