This chawan was hand-shaped in Bizen during my time in the region, then fired for 7 days in Taiga Mori’s noborigama kiln.
For the firing, the chawan was supported by a seashell used as a firing prop placed inside the piece, exactly where the matcha is usually placed. The mark of the shell is still visible inside the chawan, like an imprint left by the firing process.
Its position in the kiln allowed the ash to settle on the foot and then spread over a large part of the outer wall. It created a glaze with golden, brown, and darker shades that adorns the piece and stands as direct evidence of its time in the kiln.
Entirely dependent on the conditions of this firing, this transformation makes the piece impossible to reproduce exactly. It is among my favorite chawan from this firing, for the way the fire and ash have shaped its appearance.

Expertise
Atelier Tadaima
Tadaima is a project dedicated to Japanese handcrafted ceramics and everyday objects.
Born from several trips to Japan, the project stems from a curiosity for ceramics, and more specifically for the chawan, whose presence in daily Japanese life gradually led me towards tea, matcha, and the world surrounding them.
